Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Ideas for Your Old Sweaters

A Cozy Pillow Made from a Red SweaterWhen the time comes to say goodbye to your favorite old sweater, it may be very sad to let go. The great thing is that even if you can’t wear your sweater any further, you don’t need to give it up! Rather, think about upcycling your sweater into something else with a fun do-it-yourself project. We’ve listed some easy, creative ways to repurpose old sweaters into things you can use all winter long!

Cozy mittens. Sewing a pair of warm winter mittens from an old sweater is quick and easy! Simply outline your hands in chalk around the bottom edge of a sweater, making the outline approximately 1/4 inch bigger than your hand. At that point, cut out the pieces. Lastly, turn the pieces inside out and sew them together, leaving the bottom edge open. Flip your new mittens right side out and enjoy!

Decorative pillow. Nothing says comfy like a sweater-covered decorative pillow for your Roanoke home! To make a pillow from an old sweater, you just need a pillow for reference and cut the sweater to size. Next, turn the pieces inside out and sew them together, leaving enough room on one side to put the pillow inside. Then stitch the opening shut and add buttons or other decorative elements.

Fingerless gloves. One more ideal way to repurpose an old sweater is to use it to craft fingerless gloves! Both attractive and functional, a pair of fingerless gloves can help you stay warm in frosty weather while enabling you to type or swipe on your phone. Focus on cutting the sleeves off the sweater to any height you desire. Afterward, make a hole for your thumbs. End of the story! Cute fingerless gloves you can wear in any season!

Boot toppers. Another styling option for upcycling an old sweater is to create some pretty boot toppers. Boot toppers may help keep your legs warm and protect your legs from rough seams or zippers. To make boot toppers, just cut the upper sleeve off an old sweater long enough to fit your calf and then fold the extra material over the top of your boot.

Headband. A headband is another quick and beautiful craft you can produce from an old sweater. You may customize your headband as thin or as wide as you wish or make more than one for more options. At first, begin cutting a strip from the sweater in your ideal width, then stitch the ends together to fit your head. Instant warmth and appeal!

Pocket hand warmers. One essential device you can take with you to stay warm in cold weather is a pocket hand warmer. To create one out of a sweater, cut several squares from a sweater arm or band, turn inside out, and stitch up the sides. Cut a tiny opening and fill with dried beans, lentils, or pie weights. You can also insert buckwheat and dried lavender for a pleasant aroma. Then, close the opening, heat in the microwave, and slide into a pocket for toasty warm fingers!

Smartphone case. The chances are that your personal tech gadgets don’t like being cold any more than you do! Protect them and repurpose an old sweater all at once by sewing a simple smartphone or tablet case. Trace your tech device with chalk on the sweater, then turn inside out and sew, leaving one edge open. Add a button or other design for a lovely and functional result!

Sweater wreath. Upcycled sweaters can be pretty and functional when you make a fun sweater wreath for your home. Using a foam or other wreath form, cut and sew your old sweater around the form to produce an appealing wreath. Attach some nice ribbon or other ornamental objects, and you will have a wreath you can enjoy all season long – and beyond!
